Colombian President Warns 'I Shall Return to Arms Again' if United States Invades.

Donald Trump along with Colombia's president have turned up the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations following US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates cocaine mills and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions coupled with Allegations

Talking to journalists on Sunday, the American leader hinted at comparable use of force towards the South American nation, stating the country faces serious problems and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating the drug and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, the nation's current leader, is directly involved in the illicit industry.

A Strained Relationship

The country was historically a key ally of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have worsened significantly following Trump came to office.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by criminal organizations including one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Response

When asked whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me."

The Colombian leader, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle decades ago, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he posted in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And should they arrest the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of Colombians admires and supports, they will release the powerful force of the people," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed part of his youth belonging with the radical M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate that he never took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he was involved in writing the nation's constitution in 1991 and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the presidency.

"I pledged to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up the fight," he affirmed.

Increased Security along with Cross-Political Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's security detail had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices spanning the political spectrum have condemned the possibility of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

The US revoked the president's entry visa after he called on American soldiers to refuse unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed financial sanctions targeting Petro, his wife and several close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels in the region and bombing suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted attacks on maritime targets off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
