The show kicks off with the intelligence unit confined as part of a simulation about a potential terror incident, supervised by two Home Office agents. As things progress, it becomes clear a real incident has taken place and a chemical weapon has been unleashed. The tension ratchets up as reports reveal a disaster happening externally, and escalates as the boss appears to be infected, and the government agents endeavor to depart, forcing Matthew Macfadyen’s character to opt for either shooting them or allowing them to leave and potentially infecting the secure MI5 headquarters. As this is Spooks, his decision is predictable.
Threads had minimal funding but one of the most frightening programmes I have ever watched due to its harsh realism and bleak government data. Saw it not long ago after seeing the first airing; I often attended the bar in Sheffield from the programme that highlighted the truth and the glib matter-of-fact official information that were transmitted. Still absolutely terrifying 35 years later.
The concluding episode of Severance’s debut season deserves a top spot among intense episodes. I was throughout the episode literally perched nervously, straining every sinew with Dylan to hold the switches that allowed the Innies to remain active, while shouting to the Innies to reveal their realities. The concluding高潮 – “she is living!” – resembled a outburst.
Episode five of the third series of Industry made my pulse quicken. I needed to stop and stand and leave the room several times due to the immense extent of the reckless self-harm I observed. Rishi Ramdani is in major difficulty at work and home – up to his eyeballs in debt to loan sharks due to his addictive betting, engaging in dangerous ventures with a gamble on the pound which may result in huge losses for his employer. So of course, he goes on a gambling spree, consumes excessive substances and alcohol and experiences wins and losses, is brutally attacked. Whenever you assume things cannot decline more, it does. There’s hope of redemption at the end of the episode yet he wastes the chance, resulting in dreadful effects during the season’s final episode. Definitely needed a lie-down after that!
The series Peep Show isn’t typically anxiety-inducing. However, the Holiday episode includes such amounts of embarrassment that it’ll have you standing up throughout the entire episode, filled with nervousness. The situation intensifies once Jeremy and Mark find themselves having to lie about the dog they unintentionally hit and later efforts to get rid of it. You subsequently use the rest of the installment doubting if it can actually be more terrible than burning, and it is possible!
No other viewing has been as gripping as when I first saw the concluding episode of The West Wing’s second season. The episode starts with the aftermath of the demise (in a car crash) of the president’s confidential aide and escalates to a高潮 with a situation in Haiti, and the fallout from the non-disclosure about the president’s MS condition, along with affirmation of his plan to pursue re-election. Excellent TV. Never bettered.
The opening of the British series Bodyguard, with the hero aboard a train alongside his juvenile boy, ranks among the most gripping episodes I’ve seen. He spots a Muslim woman heading to the toilet and knows something is off. The explosive disposal specialists are summoned, enter the train, and attempt to convince the woman to discard her bomb jacket. Tension escalates to a practically unendurable point, until yes, the vest is diffused.
Buffy enters her house to discover her mother has died due to natural factors, which is the most unusual type of death in this mystical program. The installment lacks any soundtrack, a sullen tone, and we witness the episode via the perspective of Buffy’s shock of discovering her mother.
The concluding moment of the last installment of the show was pants-wettingly tense. And if you viewed it when it first premiered, you – initially – were uncertain of the reason. Tony’s adversaries, actual and perceived, had all been defeated. Surely this has the feel of the season one ending? “Think about the small elements.” But the mood is bizarrely ominous. Nearly Twin Peaks-like fear. The family gathers in a diner. Meadow finds a parking spot. Tony sadly tells Carmela there’s trouble afoot with another member of his team working with the government. Meadow parks. Unfamiliar individuals come into the diner. Stare at Tony(?) Meadow is parking. Tony plays a track on the music machine. Meadow parks. The bell sounds, an individual enters. It cannot be Meadow, she is still parking. Tony looks up. Don’t stop. It stops. My spirit fell about 20 minutes later.
I remained awake to view this installment in the early morning. It was so intense following the introduction of villain Negan finding the group, cruelly taunting his victims then not knowing who he killed (finished with an unresolved situation).
