People have gathered across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
The government authorities delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official said the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the two sides.
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere appears as home now and until all the hostages return no one will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home again, we can relax again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist a participant explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to finish in as payment for the release of the hostages.
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had received the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area said another two fatalities had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the southern area, medics reported.
