Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
