Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years of Age

Global audiences grieves the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose distinctive voice was instrumental in spreading reggae music worldwide. He has died at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
