LeBron James was aware his incredible streak of reaching double digits was in danger. At the decisive instant, though, it was not his focus.
The smart move was to pass the ball – so he did. Following that play, the legendary streak came to an end.
James's astounding streak of 1,297 consecutive regular-season double-digit scoring performances ended during a recent game, as basketball's greatest scorer had only eight total points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He provided the decisive pass, feeding teammate Rui Hachimura for a three-pointer as time expired.
“Zero,” James stated when asked on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
He might have sought to clinch the contest – and preserved his record – in the closing seconds, yet he opted to dish the ball to his teammate stationed in the corner. Hachimura sank it, and James raised his arms with his hands in the air.
“Just playing basketball correctly. Make the correct play,” James explained. “That’s just been my philosophy. It's how I was taught the game. I’ve done that for two decades.”
James is very conscious of how many points he has during a game,” commented the team's head coach JJ Redick. He made the play like he’s done so many times.”
LeBron checked back into the contest for the final time with 5:23 remaining, the result along with the historic run both hanging in the balance. He had only six points from 3-of-15 shooting then.
He got a bucket with 1:46 left to level the contest then missed a 14-footer at one minute to go that might have gotten him to double digits.
He didn’t take a subsequent shot – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves found him in the waning seconds, yet LeBron decided to make the pass instead.
The basketball deities, if you approach it correctly, they tend to repay you,” Redick stated.
The record commenced over eighteen years ago. It was easily the longest such streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem had 787 such games, and The Mailman was fourth on the list with 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” remarked Lakers center a fellow Laker.
He focuses on playing the game of basketball. The chance was there but given the player he is and his personality as a person, he chose the team play, found Rui and we won the game.”
Getting to ten points had long been a guarantee early in the final period. Throughout his run, he had attained double figures by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
Yet two of those rare games below ten points through three quarters had happened just days before: He had nine points entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks on 28 November, then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns on Monday night.
LeBron was able to keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. One game later, it was over – but he still rejoiced all the same.
My focus is to make the correct play. That is instinctive, no matter what,” James declared. When you make the unselfish play, the basketball gods forever rewarding me.”
