Following a pivotal victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has significantly narrowed the deficit in the driver's standings. He now finds himself just a dozen points behind leader Lando Norris and leading teammate Oscar Piastri, the scene is set for a nail-biting three-way season finale at the renowned Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's most recent win was anything but conventional. Even though he delivered a masterful drive for his team, the result was largely determined by a controversial strategic move from the McLaren team. Choosing to stay on track during an early safety car period, the team presented the initiative to their rival, who capitalized perfectly.
"I'm excited, I'm eager to go there and give it my best shot," the driver said. "I approach it with just optimism. I try everything I can but equally, if I don't win it, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This outlook as he puts it removes much of the stress. The goal for the last race is straightforward: to get the most from every single element from himself and the machine.
What makes Verstappen's championship charge particularly notable is how far he has come back. After the Zandvoort round in late August, he was a massive 104 points behind the then-leader his rival and had publicly written off his title chances.
The shift began with significant technical upgrades introduced by his team at the Italian Grand Prix. Modifications to the vehicle's underbody and aerodynamic package rectified long-standing performance deficits, allowing the driver to push to the limit with the chassis once more.
From then on, his form has been utterly formidable, achieving five wins and multiple podiums. He was eager to credit the unified work behind this comeback.
"We have triumphed where maybe we shouldn't have, by executing the optimal strategy as a group," he explained. "The way I work with my team on the pit wall and the every member... we are really well integrated."
With the paddock head to Abu Dhabi, the championship picture is crystal clear.
The intensity rests heavily on McLaren, who have let a big points cushion disappear due to unfortunate events, including a exclusion for both cars in Las Vegas. From his perspective, the situation brings a sense of fearlessness, transforming the final race into a pure opportunity to attack with nothing to lose.
