New Year Revelers Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Expected Across the UK

Weather experts are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be low, meaning warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.

Temperatures Set to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Advisories Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this signified the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
