New York state AG has introduced a fresh reporting form asking locals to share photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This action follows a shortly after a high-profile ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting widespread protests.
A lawmaker revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Demonstrations occurred in the city on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents is entitled to reside free from terror," the AG wrote in a statement.
"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I ask you to provide that footage with the authorities. We are pledged to assessing these accounts and determining any violations of law."
The portal provides spaces to submit photos and videos of the incident, as well as a field to note where it occurred. Before submitting, users must mark a checkbox that acknowledges that "the office might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved dozens of ICE personnel, took place in a well-known neighborhood of the city where fake products and other goods are sold daily widely – often to tourists.
Videos of Tuesday's raid reveal several covered and weaponized federal agents zip-tying and detaining a man, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of residents trailed the personnel through the streets. An armored truck was also seen traveling down the urban roads.
In a Wednesday press conference featuring the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be arrested for no reason." He said the citizens were released on the following day with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman said. "This constitutes a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to utilize the troops to halt conflict that they have created."
Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three political contenders criticized the raid, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," a political candidate stated.
The city's community groups voiced concern also.
"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to focus on local sellers attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to public safety and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the head of a advocacy group.
ICE policy bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has stated it does not apprehend US citizens. Yet, external research has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities during the period of the existing leadership.
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide this year.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the current administration. Rallies opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous including allegations of force and abusive practices.
Latest, a submission submitted by legal entities alleged healthcare failures of expectant mothers in government custody.
