When Michel Illouz gradually progressed through the throngs beneath the Mediterranean pines and palm trees at the cemetery in Ra'anana, a urban center located about 21 km north of Tel Aviv, he showed appreciation to numerous participants as feasible.
Earlier he provided an open call to the local community to accompany his loved ones in honoring the memory of his 26-year-old son, Guy, whose physical form had been brought back from Gaza on Monday.
Countless individuals heeded the call. They lined the streets, followed the hearse carrying his mortal coil, and converged on the cemetery in such significant numbers that the original plan to hold the ceremony indoors had to be discarded.
Rather, the event was conducted outside, accompanied by the melody of birdsong.
This marked the first funeral since the final 20 living hostages were returned from Gaza, along with seven bodies. Another 21 of the dead prisoners continue to be lost, but at the very minimum this household now had a designated location to express sorrow and remember their son, according to close acquaintances.
Guy Illouz, a performer and recording specialist, had been struck from behind at the Nova concert event during the Hamas offensive on October 7, 2023. Prior to the incident, he had reached out to his father from a hiding place to tell him he cared; to offer final words. He was seized, and per those captured simultaneously, he subsequently passed away from his injuries due to lack of treatment.
A close acquaintance of the Illouz family, Michelle, fifty years old, commented that it had been crucial to them that the public gathered today. The Illouz relatives, comprising Guy's two younger sisters and male sibling, had undertaken the traditional grieving process, the week-long period of bereavement, after being informed of his death in December of the year before. But now that Guy was ultimately back with them, they needed "supportive individuals again."
"It warms my heart that you joined us," expressed Michel. "This means everything to us."
He turned to his son. "Beloved Guy," he said, using a term of endearment, "it's difficult for me to imagine the days ahead without you. They grabbed you from me – they killed you – they stole my being and took my sense of self and killed my inner being and feelings."
"I feel empty inside since that pointless violence by those evil terrorists when they apprehended you and told you to turn around, and then just discharged two needless bullets into your back."
"Thus I stood this morning, traveling to Abu Kabir identification center to identify you and part ways. They removed the white sheet, and the initial sight I noticed was that familiar expression, that optimism, that calm demeanor and grace that so exemplified you."
"I touched you, tried to detect your scent, gently felt each part in your body. I looked at you, I was alone with you, and yes, I felt with absolute certainty that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've rejoined our family. You've come back to your relatives' care, to all your close associates, and to the millions of citizens whose emotions your experience impacted."
In the initial segment of the memorial, Illouz had focused entirely on supporting his smaller offspring. He gently touched the locks of his daughters, supported his male child, showed affection and gathered his emotions for them. But then his voice broke.
"I'll miss so much traveling with you through this land, experiencing your company, enjoying your artistic creations, resting on elevated terrain and lighting the burner to prepare the beverage the way only you knew how – 'Papa, do you see the coffee bubbles? You have to simmer it carefully, let the foam rise, then heat it once more. Stir the coffee with circular motions' – and then your expression while enjoying the drink and your delight in every particular taste."
"Earlier than my exit Abu Kabir today, I fulfilled my commitment. I observed you, breathed you in one last time, and yes, I kissed you on the brow. I was managed to observe your handsomeness even in the situation in which you were repatriated."
"My Guy-shuk, I love you so much, I cherish you. I will yearn for you every instant and tiny segment of my time. Rest now, my dear child, relax after a travel of 24 months through worlds unknown to us. I hold you dear, my Guy-shuk, my cherished eldest child."
