He fought the law and the law prevailed.
A couple of months following being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.
The adjudicated plotter – who had been living under house arrest in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, amidst growing talk that he will be moved to a notorious high-security facility.
Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing ex- military man displayed little compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we provide those dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up behind bars, you simply need is not rape, abduction or theft.”
But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, four of whom this week inspected the complex in an obvious bid to discourage the supreme court from transferring him there.
Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he anticipated the septuagenarian figure to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his destination could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal problems – the result of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the standard of prison meals.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells accommodating four dozen inmates: “That’s practically one square metre per inmate.
“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.
The senator isn't the sole person voicing opinions ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.
Authoring in a prominent newspaper, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to see “the biggest wrong in its record”.
“It represents an unfairness that erodes the spirits of countless of Brazilians,” the former minister said.
It is possibly correct considering the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. However his expected incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of millions other people who feel he should be incarcerated for plotting to stop the incoming president from taking power – and even plotting to have him murdered.
Reimont Otoni, a representative for the sitting president's political party, stated: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to obtain proper treatment – but proper care in prison. He cannot persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time celebrating the tough treatment of convicts, had abruptly become aware to their rights. “Recently has the far-right – which has always asserted that human rights should not be for criminals – decided to tour a penitentiary to learn what situations are truly like,” he remarked.
“He is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading conduct”.
Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about 14,000 detainees, his probable assigned facility seems to be a adjacent jail for law enforcement and other “unique” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).
The accommodations are much more comfortable than those in the main prison, although still a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the stunning official residence, approximately 12 miles away.
As per information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 130 square foot WC with a water facility and a 12 square meter terrace. “He could be allowed to have a set and additionally a minibar in his quarters as long as they were donated by his relatives,” sources stated.
He criticized the speculated proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
