Profound Upheaval Forecasted: UK's Worst-Case Climate Crisis Possibilities Revealed by Experts

The gravest possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, encompassing a searing 4C increase in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea levels. A separate possibility foresees a drop of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and power requirements.

Credible Events, Not Predictions

These consequences, a number of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are viewed as unlikely but possible. The researchers said that these models filled a gap in risk assessment that had left the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.

"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," stated Nigel Arnell who directed the analysis. "The nation has been planning lacking the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to get ready for environmental results they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Suite of Harsh Climate Possibilities

A further series of worst-case scenarios maps the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the end of the century. These show that temperatures could soar in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be 300% of typical amounts.

The probability of the catastrophic events happening remains uncertain due to unknown factors about what steps will be implemented to combat global warming and how the climate system will respond. This analysis was described as similar to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for the banking sector.

Critical Possibility Details

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if international cooperation breaks down or if powerful amplifying effects including the Amazon rainforest perishing release its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heat domes and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
  • AMOC Shutdown: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and water supplies would be drastically changed," noted Arnell.
  • Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica collapse rapidly, submerging coastal cities and towns. Differing from the other scenarios, this possibility is already understood by planners.
  • Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be driven up by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from industrial activity reflect sunlight from reaching the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Unthinkable

The severe models could be utilized in planning the construction of critical national infrastructure, such as expanded cities, nuclear power stations and flood defences. Knowledge about these environmental threats could also hasten the push to reduce fossil fuel emissions.

The research formulated the severe projections using a blend of past data and records, computer simulations and climate physics. The possibilities do not take into account international cascading effects including the global food shortages and resource wars.

The project was initiated as part of a government’s risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have cautioned that too little consideration was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

An independent advisory body has said that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and assess the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "very weak" by some observers.

A national response said: "Global warming is at the core of this government’s agenda, both preparing for impacts and establishing itself as a low-carbon economy. It is essential that the UK is ready for the consequences."
