This Proposed Hack
Set a couple of ice cubes on top of the soil. The idea posits when the ice melts, it gradually dispenses water, providing the root system a chance to take up it and preventing waterlogged conditions.

A Closer Look
This approach functions best for little planters and plants averse to overwatering, for instance Phalaenopsis. However, the majority of tropical-loving indoor plants do not appreciate cold temperatures. Their roots are adapted for warmth, and cold water can stress or hurt them. Room temperature is a significant role in the hack's efficacy: in a warm environment, the ice will dissolve very quickly, offering minimal value, while in a colder spot it may stay for an extended period, lowering the temperature of the roots and impeding water uptake. It is crucial to confirm ice cubes are composed of pure, potable water and never press them in contact with stems or exposed roots.

The Trial
This was tried on a Phalaenopsis. Using two cubes each week kept the roots consistently moist preventing waterlogging. However, trying the same technique on a Calathea caused browning at the leaf edges, a telltale indication of chill damage.

The Final Verdict
The cube technique may be effective for certain orchids, but it is not ideal for most tropical houseplants and hinges significantly on ambient climate. Therefore, this trick isn't advised; tepid water applied carefully is still the most dependable way to thoroughly moisten your green companions.
