When I walk into the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and being named best player.
A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
