Thousands Lost Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Storms

Approximately twenty-five thousand households in southeastern Queensland woke up lacking electricity on the start of the week after intense storm systems impacted the area, producing powerful gusts hitting 109km/h.

Large Hailstones and Widespread Damage

Homeowners witnessed large ice chunks measuring up to 7 centimeters in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology verified that various areas across Queensland had been affected by large hailstones.

Emergency crews were working to restore energy supply throughout the damaged zones, with nearly 70 crews activated to address the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Climate Difficulties

At the same time, nearly one thousand energy customers in the southern state also encountered energy failures after the capital city experienced its most precipitation in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services received over five hundred requests for assistance across the region, mostly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and water accumulation.

  • Werribee - saw considerable storm damage
  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - numerous assistance requests
  • Wyndham region - 179 emergency requests

At one point on Sunday, in excess of 28,000 electricity consumers in Victoria were lacking electricity.

Weather Forecast

Moist weather were forecast to persist along much of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

The following day was predicted as the heaviest precipitation period, with persistent thunderstorm potential anticipated across different parts of both regions.

Safety Concern

Public health experts alerted that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the state's northern country region, particularly given the current weather patterns.
